Coup D’etat: General shuts down airport, bordersto prevent country's President from getting home

Following a military coup to overthrow Burundian
President, the general who launched the coup has
ordered that the country's airport and borders be
shutdown.
Godefroid Niyombare, a top Burundian general, led
a coup today, May 13, to overthrow the President
of Burundi, Pierre Nkurunziza , whose third term
re-election bid has thrown the country into chaos
– with citizens protesting the move.
Nkurunziza was attending a regional crisis
meeting in Tanzania while he was being unseated
in Burundi. He was said to be heading back home
hours after the coup took place when Niyombare
ordered the closure of the airport and borders to
prevent the President from flying into the country.
“I order the closure of the airport and border, and
I ask every citizen and law enforcement down to
the airport to protect it,” General Niyombare said
in a radio broadcast.
Tanzanian government spokesman Salva
Rweyemamu had told AFP that Nkurunziza left
the meeting to attend to the situation in Burundi.
“He has left because of the situation prevailing in
Burundi,” he said.
